So I’ve spent years making rap beats, constantly developing and expanding upon the range of beats I am able to produce, trying to better my sound everyday. But what are the three things I am consistently doing to build relationships, increase traffic to my website, and in turn increase the overall sales and rewards?
1. The number one method I use to find rappers looking for beats
There is no single best way to find rappers or singers looking for hip hop beats but there are two main things I use to search regularly. The main method I use is rapper forums. Looking on forums such as Rap Royalty and RapMusic.com, I find people looking to buy rap instrumentals for their next project, their next EP, and I strike up conversation, build a relationship and give them deals on my beats such as 5 beats for a discounted price.
Another method I use is searching hashtags on Twitter and Instagram. When rappers need beats they typically ask for them on social media so I can go in and search the terms they may be using and then I do the same thing, give them my beats (i.e. snippets; keep that respeck on my name), see what they like, and I attempt to get the best price for the both of us.
Being cautious is essential when using this method. I constantly come across a few who never intend to buy rap beats but will tell me “they’re the next big thing” or “they have a buzz in their city”. I stay alert for any words such as “buzz”, “Let’s work”, “let’s take off”, “check out my music and tell me if we can work” and obviously “free”. I don’t need to get an upfront payment every time, but I’m cautious to receiving nothing at all from the relationship. Read more on this here.
2. Putting out content
One thing I’ve learnt over the past year or so is that sometimes people are just as interested in the process of what I’m doing rather than just the finish product. People also need to know I exist and if I’m not putting out any content whatsoever, nobody will ever discover my music. So whether that’s the process of making a beat which I now record regularly, or just the day-to-day happenings within my life which I share through Snapchat stories and now Instagram stories, Letting people see what I do, the journey I’m on can be just as valuable as the finish beat to the overall story. This also allows people to develop a understanding of who I am which isn’t possible when I just share my highlight reel. Check out what I regularly put out below.

3. Having my own website is so important
My website acts as my own hub which can holistically represent everything which I put out, including the hip hop beats I make, the beat making videos I post on YouTube and then embed on my website, and also the blog which you are currently reading. Not only that, it allows me to monitor what people are interested in, which articles they’re reading the most whilst also indicating where I need to increase my efforts in getting people to my website.
My websites exist as an extension of myself which truly displays everything I do whilst adding to the professionalism people like to see and giving me a chance to appear on Google when individuals search “buy hip hop beats” etc. I’ve only recently launched my website so I know what it’s like not to be able to afford one but before the website, I just did my best to grow awareness on SoundCloud and YouTube and then once I sold a bunch of beats, I invested that money into developing my website.
I think this all comes down to the passion I have for so many different lanes whether that’s producing music, writing blog articles or creating visuals and utilising every skill I have, totally focusing on what I’m good at and what I am able to show in order to increase awareness. I believe doing this consistently has led me to having more people know my name, understand what rappers actually want and finding paths to help other producers along the way.
